5 Beauty Must Have’s

by

It’s BEAUTY WEEK on The Yacht Stew & can you tell I’m just a little bit excited?!

Before we dive into it, I wanted to have a little #realtalk moment…

I have struggled with my skin for years, it honestly has always been a huge insecurity of mine. As stewardesses, there is an intense pressure to have flawless skin, impeccable make up application & a perfect pony tail. It can all get a little too much sometimes, especially when you have little time.

So, before we get into Beauty Week, I wanted to let you know that regardless of whether you love practising perfectly winged eyeliner, or you prefer to moisturize & go, YOU DO YOU!  Full disclosure, I am rather clueless when it comes to make up. My primary focus has always been to “hide” my acne & I’m hoping this week I will learn to embrace and enjoy using Make Up, instead of using it as something to disguise my skin issues.

My beauty knowledge is rather shocking, so I’ve enlisted the help of some INCREDIBLE yacht stewardesses! These women are going to be covering a few topics this week, from their experiences of what works & what doesn’t when onboard!

Now let’s get started! We are kicking off the week with:
Top 5 beauty MUST HAVES!

Heather

My name is Heather and I’m from South Africa.  I am going into my 5th season of yachting where I have utilized my skills of body and skincare therapy to pamper guests with luxury services.  I studied Somatology, full time for 3 years and after working in the beauty industry for a while and traveling abroad (including living in Bali), I decided to venture into the world of yachting. You’ll often find me in the crew mess  after a long day on charter with some jam & toast or a chip party! I am 100% addicted to Sephora & will never turn down a G&T.

*Heather & I worked together for a year & as a wedding gift, she gave me a facial before my big day. I can honestly say it was the BEST FACIAL of my life. She’s one talented lady!

Top 5 beauty must have’s when starting a busy season?

Face Wash – A good cleanser is really important to start and end your skincare routine, especially when you don’t have a lot of time for a drawn out beauty regime. I use: La Roche-Posay Cleansing Micellar Foaming Water, it has a pump that turns the liquid into a foam and it leaves your skin feeling squeaky clean, as well as nourished at the same time.

A nourishing moisturizer/face cream – Nothing beats cleansing your skin and applying a rich moisturiser that you can actually feel work.  I have recently discovered a skincare range called “Drunk Elephant” (super cute name and incredible products). I use: Protini Polypeptide Cream. (available at Sephora)

Exfoliator – You will find your skin will change over the season, especially from the air-conditioning, your diet and wearing more make up than you are used to.  I like to give my skin a good scrub to buff off all the dead skin cells and promote a healthy glow.  I use The Body Shop’s Vitamin C Glow Boosting Microdermabrasion. I also have a silicone manual exfoliator that I got from Forever 21 for $5, and I absolutely love it!

Eye cream – Your days will be long, and your sleep will be short, but a good eye cream will be sure to help hide that!  The best one I have found is: “Ginzing” by Origins, which is a refreshing eye cream used to brighten and de puff.  It really gives you that extra glow that you may so desperately need!

Lipbalm – I cannot go without a good lipbalm.  I have lost countless to the washing machine because I always have one in my skort pocket.  Sephora’s lip balms which come in various flavours are my absolute favouite! Especially Coconut!

Mishka

Mishka is pictured here on the left.

My name Is Mishka van Nelson and I am an incurable Sephora loving gal.  I have been a make-up and beauty enthusiast ever since I can remember. Anyone that knows me knows my weakness is a self-care Sunday and a shopping spree to any Health and Beauty outlet. This includes binging on make-up tutorials and skincare routines. Judge away-My skin does not. I am no expert on skincare- but I am when it comes to my face. Having found the most rewarding job – Yachting it allows for a less guilty conscious when it comes to skincare spoils.

Top 5 beauty must have’s when starting a busy season? (Here are SIX!)

A great cleanser – I found Kiehls to be an amazing brand, they are so attentive when purchasing and you get a skin swab to test your skin type, in-house. Origin Ginzing  Energizer – this is the best wake-up from a 5 hour sleep, as a moisturizer or cleanser–  is one for the books. Your skin will do star jumps! If you don’t have sensitive skin, try a product with AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids). Simply just helps to hydrate and exfoliate your skin.

Toner!Toner!Toner! This is a must have- I am obsessed with Pixie Glow Tonic.  Can’t figure out if it’s the smell or the glow I love more. Another Goldie is Ole Henriksen Glow2OH  – great for our Decky Galz out there spending hours at a time in the sun.

Eye Treatment – The Kiehls Creamy Avocado Eye Treatment is oh-so good and speaks for itself. Delicious to apply thick under the eyes as an eye mask. Avocado

SPF – Terrible rays are not just from the direct sun- so invest in a great sunblock for your face, Hellocare 360’  is a Broad Spectrum  sunblock and has a vegan option, as well.  No trace with or without make-up. Great for crew!!

Lip conditioner/scrub –  I can’t got without  Fresh SUGAR

Jade roller –  I have a Rose Quarts roller which is my favourite tool as my skin tends to retain a lot of water and this magic wand de-puffs instantly. Place it in the crew fridge for 5min – you will be forever grateful – it’s absolutely lush!

Holly
My name is Holly, I have been in yachting for just over 2 years and although it’s had it’s ups and downs I love it!  Prior to coming into yachting I was a makeup artist working for MAC cosmetics as well as doing freelance hair and makeup for weddings and photoshoots.  I have recently taken a couple of months out of yachting and been back in the UK spending time with friends and family but will be joining my new yacht very soon as stewardess/hair stylist.  I’m a firm believer in self-care and looking after yourself so do those face-masks, buy that slightly overpriced moisturiser and eat that slice of cake because you deserve it!
Top 5 beauty must have’s when starting a busy season?

Cleanser – Emma Hardline Cleansing Balm is my favourite as it will literally take everything off your face including waterproof mascara. It’s also very soothing if you have sensitive skin.

Exfoliator – You should be getting rid of all those dead skin cells at least twice a week (for dryer skin maybe 3/4 times a week!) I really love the MAC cosmetics volcanic ash exfoliator. It’s made with sugar and really nourishing oils that, after exfoliating and adding a bit of water to my face, I leave on as a mask. For someone with more sensitive skin there is Clarins.

Waterproof mascara – The last thing you want is to be caught in the crossfire of the owners kids having a water flight. Your hair, that you washed this morning, has become soaked and mascara is streaming down your face, and it’s just before lunch service! MAC in extreme dimension waterproof mascara is my go to for all my clients and myself when I do makeup!

Foundation – Nearly all my friends/colleagues ask me what foundation they should use, and it changes for everyone.  It’s important that if you do get a rocking tan during the summer, that you start the season with a couple of foundation shades that you can use as your tan develops. The last thing you want is to have to spend those precious few hours off searching to find a specific darker foundation/concealer/tinted moisturizer at your port.

Self Tanner – I know it might seem like a bit of a faff when you’re working long hours, but I have quite pale skin, so when I’m in the sun I have to protect my skin a lot, especially my face. I LOVE Tan-Luxe The Face Illuminating Tan Drops! I add a few drops to my moisturizer and it makes my skin looks super glowy.  Therefore, I am able to wear less makeup thus spending less time getting ready.

Tomorrow we’ll be talking with the girls about their favourite long-lasting Make-Up! I’m all for only applying make up once a day on charter and just adding a little touch up before dinner service. So if I can find make up that stays put and doesn’t require extra fuss, I am all for it!

Big hugs,

Gem xo
