Mocktails ~ A healthy CHEERS!

by

When doing cocktail training onboard, how frequently do you include Mocktails? My guess if you are anything like me, Mocktails rarely cross your mind. Believe it or not, it DOES happen & since my first Non-Alcohol charter happened a few years ago, I’ve always made sure I had a few recipes ready just in case!

Last summer, we hosted a Canapé evening & it was requested that we offer 3 alcohol free options, so the Service Stew & I got busy in the Pantry! It was such a fun change to focus on working with the flavours of the fruit, herbs & vegetables that we chose & not have to pair it with varies botanicals in a gin for example.

Behind the Scenes:

In front of guests:

On the menu, we had the following:

Watermelon & Ginger Mimosa
Elderflower Lemonade
Grapefruit, Basil & Strawberry Spritzer

We made these recipes up as we went & had to make adjustments based on the sweetness of the fruit. TIP: Keep in mind when using fresh fruit, the flavour can vary, so taste test as you go & don’t over do it with sugar syrup or sweeteners.

Watermelon & Ginger Mimosa
1 Cup Watermelon
1 Thick Piece of Ginger
Ginger Beer

Method:
Juice the Watermelon & Ginger
Double Strain to ensure there are not bits in the cocktail
Pour into a Champagne glass & top with Ginger Ale
Fizzing will occur – add a small amount of citrus to counteract this.

Elderflower Lemonade
1 Lemon
Bottle Green Elderflower Cordial
Perrier
Cucumber

Method:
1/2 Lemon (squeeze into a glass & using a strainer, pour into the serving glass)
1 teaspoon Green Bottle Elderflower Cordial
Top with Perrier
Garnish with Lemon Twist & Cucumber Slices

Grapefruit, Basil & Strawberry Spritzer
1/2 Large Pink Grapefruit
5 Ripe Strawberries
3 Basil Sprigs
Ginger Ale

Method:
Juice Grapefruit & pour into a cocktail shaker
Add Strawberries & Basil
Muddle everything together
Pour into a highball
Fill to 2/3 with ice
Top with Ginger Ale
Stir
Garnish with a grapefruit slice & basil leaf
